My new reality.

Here I am. It’s been a rough couple of months, and the lack of blogging is mostly related to my mood: sad and overwhelmed. A lot has been placed on my plate, and whether I want it or not, it remains. And as selfish as it is, I feel that I am too young to be dealing with this. This is not how I pictured my life. This is not what I thought I needed to be prepared for. But unfortunately the option to give up, is not an option. We must move forward, and somewhere along the way I got placed in the front. I want my old life back, but everyday I am reminded that this is my new reality. I’m not going to lie, I’m tired. I’m sad. I’m overwhelmed. I’m scared.

How I wish my days were consumed with watching the faucet drip.

My WPPI 2010 Recap.

Me: So, mom, would you mind going online and checking me in for my flight home tomorrow.
Mom: Certainly, but it says here your flight isn’t tomorrow, but the next day.
Me: Can’t be, I get home Wednesday.
Mom: You mean, Thursday.

Apparently she was right. My flight was Thursday. Whoops. But lucky for me, my last night there was definitely one of my favorites times in Vegas. No going out, no dressing up, just walking the strip with Lan and Vu and Lydia, sightseeing. Yes I was a geeky tourist, WITH CAMERA IN HAND. I hope you enjoy my WPPI 2010 Recap video, as it only took me FOUR HOURS to make the measly three minute video.

And ten bonus points who can name five things in this video that make me, me. Go.

Vu Bui - WPPI was SUCH a blur. I mean really, really, really just a blur that went by faster than I could have imagined. I guess it’s funny that I say that because it was my third WPPI and it’s always a blur… but yeah, that’s what I’m saying yet again.

The only things we have when it is all over are knowledge (if we learned anything), friends (if we made any), memories (if we can remember anything) and media (if we actually shoot any of it). To me, the media is what really ties everything else together and makes it real.

You did a fantastic job on this video, and for your first real edit, WOW.March 25, 2010 – 6:38 pm

Mom - That was awesome!! I must watch it a few more times. I have guesses for what makes you you, but I’ll be kind and fair, and leave those for others to guess. I probably have an unfair advantage! From the air, Baltimore doesn’t look half bad!March 25, 2010 – 2:13 pm

Auntie - VERY cool!!!March 25, 2010 – 8:50 am

This is me.

I sat on the floor as the glow of the television illuminated the living room. With a super early morning ahead, I was trying to fit everything in my suitcase. Because well, when you bring seven pairs of shoes…it’s a art form, packing, that is. My nerves were in a giant ball of stomach aches, and Alberta kept telling me that everything would be okay. But…what if everyone can see the ‘I’m a nervous loser’ written across my forehead? And what if no one wants to hang out with me? And what if I can’t find something I like to eat and STARVE FOR FIVE DAYS STRAIGHT? She assured me that I was overreacting, but let’s be real, they were valid questions.

When we woke up early the next morning she packaged homemade banana bread into a tupperware for me to take and eat if I couldn’t find something for breakfast. Who brings their mothers’ homemade banana bread to Vegas in a tupperware? This girl. It was an ingenious idea and it calmed my nerves for that minute and I carried on. When I crossed the threshold and stepped on the plane my stomach was in my throat, there I was leaving everything that I am comfortable with, behind. After I arrived at the MGM, oh some 13 hours later, I went through my suitcase to find my clothes for the evening. And in that suitcase, there were several miniature pink post-it notes handwritten from my mom, “Learn Lots, Have Fun, Love you!” My nerves calmed, and I carried on. There I was, across the country, with a little comfort from home.

Turns out, I did indeed have fun, learned a lot, and met some new friends, while I was in Vegas, and spent the entire weekend back trying to catch up on sleep. And before I left, I insisted we eat at In n’ Out Burger for the third time in my life, but who’s counting.

Vegas, baby!

That’s right, I’m in Vegas. Enjoying the sunshine, sandy desert, and slot machines! If I win big, I might not be coming back. Ok, so maybe the trip might not be all play, I’m here for WPPI which is the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International convention. This is my second year going and I can’t wait to learn a lot and soak everything in. See you when I return!

These images are from last year at WPPI.

And here I am, trying to stay vertical while in the desert when a storm rolled it.
