Thank You!

This is how a photographer extends their gratitude of thanks to someone…with a photo shoot! Just wanted to give a huge thanks to Robert for logistically planning, holding lenses, bringing chairs for me to stand on, and carrying my 310 pound camera bag to and from the car, while I was in Chicago.

Yolanda and Victor: Sneak Peek

Over the weekend I traveled to Chicago to photograph Yolanda and Victor’s wedding. They let me do whatever I wanted, and I LOVE when couples leave the creativity up to me. Although it certainly helped that they are one hot couple. Check back for the full post.

I mean, really? Wow!

Crazy talk: Style.

One blog reader recently commented that I am always so stylish and cutely dressed. Yes, I indeed did a double take to make sure that was in fact what I was reading. Although, INTERNET, don’t worry, I have made her an appointment with the optometrist for next Wednesday at 9AM. CLEARLY she needs her eyes checked.

Lately (as in the last 2 years) the shopping and looking stylish has taken a drastic nose dive into the sand. I spend most of my time working at the restaurant, and the other three free days a year sitting at my computer trying to get editing done. When I actually have a day off my brain goes into shock mode and can’t pick an outfit out for the life of me, I don’t even know where to begin. TOO MUCH PRESSURE. I CAN’T DO IT, I CAN’T DO IT! And then, I usually end up wearing jeans, my black pumas, a black shirt, and a hoodie sweatshirt. Yes, that is EXACTLY WHAT I WEAR TO WORK at the restaurant.

In my attempt to convince myself of said statement actually being true, I have decided to start a style post. They aren’t all necessarily clothes, just things I like and think are cute. Not sure how often this will happen, but I’d thought I’d give it a whirl. I only have had one of these, and well, I killed it.

1. Chartreuse clutch I would die for from Etsy.
2. Gorgeous Turquoise earrings from Banana Republic.
3. Fancy gray flip flops from J. Crew.
4. Summery shirt from BCBG.
5. Handmade birdcage veil from Etsy. Handmade Lovelies is a company by a photographer.
6. Gray Heels from Nordstroms.
7. I adore paper. Thick, thin, envelopes, enclosures, invites, letterpress, you name it. And these letterpress invites from Bella Figura are AH-MAZ-ING.
8. I think topiaries are the cutest little plants. EVER. Too bad I don’t have a green thumb. Check out this little guy at Smith & Hawkin.
9. Although I have yet to figure out a use for these little suitcases from the Paper Source, I think they are adorable.
10. Headbands are all the rage these days, and this one from J. Crew, would make an awesome accessory.

Chi Town

I am in Chicago right now for a wedding I had over the weekend and will be answering all emails when I get back…HOLLA!

(No, I did not take this picture, but I couldn’t find a photo credit)

No, I did not take this picture either ;)

Crustiness.

Before things start to get really crazy around here, I wanted to remind myself why I love shooting, and shoot some things for myself. Just because. Nothing in particular, nothing spectacular, but because I love photography. So in the past few weeks my camera has accompanied me to the grocery store, Chipotle, and my mini field trips to see what crusty things I could find. If you hadn’t noticed, I have a slight gravitational pull towards blue/green things, and all things crusty. The older and crustier, the better.

Trees: Of the Cherry Variety

Every year I try to make time to get down to the Tidal Basin and check out the cherry blossoms while they are coming out. Alberta and I went on a gorgeous Sunday, and they were pretty spectacular. But be forewarned: DO NOT go on the weekend. Not everyone has the stellar parking skills such as myself and won’t be able to handle it. (And just for the record, I parked right on Constitution Ave right by the Washington Monument…I told you I was good)

cbs04

I normally do not let people take pictures of me, but this was for educational purposes only. I was teaching Alberta how to use my camera. And by USE, I mean shoot on Manual.
cbs01

YUMM. By the way, it is illegal to sniff, cut, break, or climb the cherry trees. Ok, maybe not the first one.
cbs03

Moms.
cbs02

This little thing is what all the fuss is about.
cbs07

As we headed back past the Washington Monument, these kids were laying on the ground up against the monument…interesting. Couldn’t figure out what they were doing.
cbs09

cbs05

On our way home we detoured through little neighborhoods, and wouldn’t you know it we found a couple of streets lined with huge SUPER old cherry trees. So old, that the trunks were sprouting their own little cherry blossoms…how stinkin cute are they?!
cbs06

The gorgeous cherry trees were in yards that were just as stunning as the trees themselves. If you own this house…I love it, and will trade you two cupcakes a week, for the next 4 years, for it. Please.

The Busy Life of a Superhero.

It has been quite some time since I’ve babysat and experienced the busy life of a three year old boy. I had forgotten about all the monsters that needed to be chased, sword fights to be conquered, dirt to be dug in, and hiding from the bad guys. Little Michael quickly reminded me, and I have a feeling those bad guys won’t be coming back…thanks to us, ok mostly Michael.

Michael is SOO animated, I couldn’t keep up with all his faces.

And then, after a long day of saving the world, he changes out of his superhero clothes and washes up, just like the rest of us.

To Stink, or not to Stink.

No excuses. I know. BUT I believe I have a very good reason for my lack of blog posts. I’ve been having some internal conflict as of lately. To translate it, and sum it up for you lovely readers in a few select words: I SUCK.

And for the non-cliff-note version: In the last few months I’ve been struggling with my work. Struggling in the sense that I just don’t think it’s good enough. Is it good? Well that’s a matter of opinion, but in MY OPINION, they’re not spectacular, phenomenal or stunning. The images I have been producing just aren’t where I want them to be. They aren’t coming out as fabulous as I see them in my head.

Enter Manual. For those non-photographers out there, shooting on Manual lets you control all the settings on your camera. So for the past few months I have told the ‘oh-my-god-I’m-shooting-on-manual-nervousness’ to shut it! And well, although I know all things take practice, I am much more happy with the quality of my images. Does it take more time, yes, of course, but I’m willing to take the time and correct the settings in camera to produce some uber fabulous images.

For Easter I decided to stop at the bakery around the block and pick up something chocolately to bring to moms. Just Cakes never disappoints. And if you’re looking for wedding cakes, I can’t recommend them enough.

Mom’s yard has the cutest little details…and well I LOVE details.

Little birds have been building a nest in the wreath on the front door. I decided it was time to check it out, and see if any of the eggs had hatched. I opened the door and got a stool to see over the back of the door and OH HOW ADORABLE is this little guy! He looked so brand new, and I think he even gave me the finger cause he wasn’t in the mood for a photo shoot. Said his do wasn’t grown in yet.

Every year on Easter we have our Strong Egg competition. We dye the eggs, then two people face off with each other. One person taps their egg to the end of the other persons, and so on. The egg that doesn’t break through all the smashing wins.
