A couple of weeks ago, I was scheduled to be in Boston to have a photo session with my cousin’s adorable ten month old son. Not so adorable: the stomach flu he had. So we had to cancel the trip and hopefully reschedule sometime soon.
I was sitting at my desk that night we were supposed to fly out, majorly bummed that we weren’t able to go. At that very moment I saw a photographer in Delaware tweet/facebook post for help for her wedding that weekend. Ummmm HELLLOOOO MEEEE MEEE MEEE, I’ll HELP! as I screamed up and down. You’d think I was in fourth grade again, falling out of my plastic chair, with my hand raised so.very.high. to get the teacher to pick me for line leader. Too bad she couldn’t hear through the computer. But I did shoot her an email in 2.3 seconds with my website, telling her I would LOVE to drive to Delaware to help her.
I held my breath, because well, you know if I let it go I may not get the gig. Refresh. Refresh. Refresh. Darn email, maybe my email isn’t working. Refresh again, and wouldn’t you know, there was a lone new email in my inbox from Laura Novak. I scanned through the email, “hi megan…yadda yaddaa” but really, all I saw was YOU’RE HIRED! I couldn’t believe it. She wanted little old ME to come and shoot with her?! I was SOO excited, and a tad bit nervous.
And my expectations…well, they were exceeded. Laura is everything in this industry that photographers should be, but aren’t. She is super sweet, genuine, and a great teacher. Plus did I mention her work is classic, timeless, and absolutely amazing?! She built her company from ground up, and now has several full time employees. None of which I met, but all of whom she spoke very highly of. So from the very bottom of my wee heart, thank you Laura for letting me come along, I hope you’ll keep me in mind if you ever need someone again.
Next time I get down, I will try to remember that something else will always come along. For when you are given lemons, make lemonade. Or apple juice… if you prefer.
And since no post is complete without an image, here is one I took while I was in Long Island this past weekend. More to come on that soon.
